Brian J Morrison (b. 1980, Belfast) is a visual artist and lecturer in Photography at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.
Using photography, sculpture and installation, Morrison examines visual representations and constructions of heteronormative masculinity. By re-appropriating found imagery and creating 'three dimensional photographs' – photographic images that have been altered to include a three dimensional component, Morrison attempts to question and recontextualize pre-existing notions of maleness.
For the past two years, he has investigated the discourse surrounding the imagery produced by Joe Weider's world leading fitness magazine publishing empire, and its impact on the intensely gendered subjects of bodybuilding and men's fitness.
Morrison is currently working towards the production of a large-scale social art project that will encourage participants to engage in artistic production and debates surrounding gender theory.
